How to force-update your HTC Radar to Windows Phone 7.8

Resizable Live Tiles on the Radar's Start screen

The long-awaited Windows Phone 7.8 update (OS version 7.10.8858.136) has finally been released, but is currently available for a limited set of phones, like the Mango (WP 7.5) Nokia Lumias. So if you have a different device, like the HTC Radar in our case, and are itching to get your hands on this major update, follow this simple tutorial to force-update your phone.

Note: This trick is not exclusive to the HTC Radar and works for many other Mango Windows Phones, too.

You are just 8 steps away from Windows Phone 7.8:

  1. Connect your phone to the PC. The Zune software will be launched automatically.

  2. If there is an update available for your phone, Zune will directly take you to the update screen. If it doesn't, go to Settings > Update and it will display the 7.10.8858.136 update, if available.

  3. If the update is available, install it and skip the steps below. If not, continue with step 4.

  4. Turn off the data and Wi-Fi on your phone, or simply enable Airplane mode.

  5. Now click on the Update button in Zune, wait for 3 to 5 seconds, and turn off your PC's Internet connection. You can do this by:
    • powering off your router, or
    • disconnecting your Wi-Fi, or
    • disabling your Ethernet adapter from Network Connections in the Control Panel
  6. If you've done everything correctly, you'll see that a new update is available. If you don't see the update, try varying the waiting time in step 5. Timing is everything here, so give it a few more tries. It took us 11 tries before we got it right. But if you still don't see the update, it might not be available for your phone or region.

  7. Now reconnect your PC to the Internet and follow the wizard to complete the update process.

  8. You're done! You're now running Windows Phone 7.8!

Note: You might not get the final WP 7.8 update directly. We first got 7.10.8779.8, then 7.10.8783.12, and then the 7.10.8858.136 update.

Update [15th March, 2013]: Microsoft has released another couple of updates (7.10.8860.142 and 7.10.8862.144) to address issues with the Live Tiles. You should receive these updates normally once you've updated to 7.10.8858.136.
