The Windows Phone Marketplace hit the 100,000 apps milestone last week and we've lined up five of those apps for our Top Free Windows Phone Apps series.

  1. foursquare

    foursquare is a location-based networking service for portable devices such as smartphones. With the foursquare app, users can explore interesting places, food spots, etc. Check in to different venues, unlock badges and earn discounts. It comes with push notifications, live tile support and an integrated leaderboard. After the recent update, it's become Tango-friendly too.

  2. Amazon Kindle

    Amazon Kindle is a beautiful e-reader app for Windows Phone. With this app you can access more than 750,000 titles in the Kindle store. With Amazon's Whispersync technology, you can access your Kindle books on Amazon's Kindle devices, PC, Mac and also on Android, iOS and BlackBerry devices. It also syncs your notes, bookmarks, highlighting and even the last page you read across all these devices.

    Photosynth is an app developed by Microsoft Live Labs. It recently made its debut on the Windows Phone Marketplace. Photosynth, available for Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) and above, is undoubtedly the best panorama app on the Marketplace. You can take pictures of places and events and stitch them together with Photosynth to make great panoramas. It also lets you share interactive versions of your panoramas on Facebook and Twitter. But it doesn't stop there; you can even publish your panoramas to Bing.

    Translator is a unique offering by Microsoft. It's not just another translation app. Point your phone's camera at any text and it'll translate the text in seconds. Apart from the standard text translation, it also comes with voice recognition that can translate spoken text (requires data connection). It has an option to download languages, which will come in use when there is no data connectivity available.

  5. is a popular, free dictionary app that is updated daily. It now has over 2 million words, definitions, synonyms and antonyms. It has neat features like audio pronunciations, word origins and sample sentences and can also work offline. for Windows Phone
